Arts, crafts, crystal, design in Stockholm
- We welcome spring with colorful and sparkling pastels! In
addition, we have flowers and wonderful romantic articles for both
children and your home, says Anna Bjärkstedt, who together with her sister, Tina Groth, manages the home decorating store, Syster Lycklig.
The sisterså home decorating store is filled with furniture, decorative
items and fine articles, such as jewelry, clothing, and accessories.
For children, there is everything from children?s furniture to
educational toys.
In the collection, you will find the new Swedish brand, Lipfish, with wonderful sweaters with appliqu?s for the little ones, and several Danish brands of children?s clothing that combine smart style and romance.
In addition, if you would like to arrange a special happening for your friends, it can be arranged to keep the store open one evening. Just talk to one of the two sisters.
Knitted is a trend
Bliss for many is to express themselves with their hands. The knitting wave hardly seems to die down. On the contrary, when you have taken a liking to creating sweaters, hats, mittens, and especially shawls, you will only want to create more.
At Marias Garn (Maria?s Yarns) in S?dermalm you will learn how to knit, catch the knitting bug, and buy materials for knitting. The store carries yarns in all colors, all from a wide color spectrum of plain-colored yarns to multi-colored Swedish wool spun in Estonia, and Maria?s own hand painted alpaca and wool.
Anyone interested in learning more and meeting other knitters should visit Maria?s knitting caf? that meets once every month, or join the cool ideological association Stich?n?Bitch Stockholm, which meets in Maria?s store once every two weeks.
Stickbutiken (The Knitting Store) is another good suggestion. It is the only store in town that sells knitting machines. The advantage of owning a knitting machine is that it is incredibly much faster to create a piece of clothing. The customers include both private individuals and professional designers.
Stickbutiken is a prime place for you to find yarns and every kind of accessory for knitting and crocheting.
You will find handicrafts of various materials at the artist collective, 125 Kvadrat, in S?dermalm. The shop and the showroom are run by the artists themselves, which makes for a personal and exciting meeting with their art. While we listen, we learn more about glass, textiles, silver, gold, ceramics, metal, and wood. Every year, the shop also participates in Konsthantverkets Dag (Handicraft Day), which this year takes place April, 28.
Creations by the hand
You will find another dynamic group of artists in the old town, Gamla Stan, under the name Castor Konsthantverk (Castor Art Handicraft). This group consists of five artists whose specialty is to create handicrafts to adorn yourself. Among others, you will enjoy Monica Johansson?s exquisite Lapp handicraft, the organic silver jewelry created by the couple Contrera, and Anna Gustavsson?s intricate glass jewelry.
One of three stores with the name Iris Hantverk (Irisås Handicraft) is also located in Gamla Stan. The two other ones are located in City and S?dermalm.
Iris Hantverk sells brushes made of natural materials, which are made by visually impaired individuals. A well maintained hundred-year-old tradition! In addition, the shops are filled with well-designed handicrafts for everyday and festive occasions.
There are also three shops with the name Krabat. One shop targets mature customers, who have maintained a childlike mind, with playful design for the home. The two other shops focus on children. Here you will find wonderful swings, clothes for knights and princesses, and many other things that make living fun!

Eldorado of the glass lover
For a glass lover, Stockholm is the right place. A number of knowledgeable and capable shop owners offer both variety and specialty items.
Orrefors Kosta Boda provides an example. Its flagship store in the center of City displays the high quality of Swedish glass. The company is backed by two large Swedish glass companies that engage well-established designers as well as rising stars. A few years ago, Orrefors Kosta Boda was acquired by new owners, which has given it a lift, both with regard to selection and especially with regard to competitive pricing.
Nordiska Kristall is, of course, another recommendation for glass lovers. Today, the largest crystal shop in the heart of City, and a sister shop in Gamla Stan, are operated by the eighth generation of the family.
The shop strives to offer shoppers interesting glass from all over the world. In the shops, you will find glass designed by the famous designer, Lisa Larson, and exquisite glass by the Italian manufacturer, Venini.
Last, but not least, we would like to mention
Noble Chrystal, which also sells crystal and souvenirs in City. A large and exciting selection and a knowledgeable staff make this shop a frequently visited one, especially by international visitors.
The antique shop,
Rilton Gallery, in Gamla Stan sells antique glass, furniture, and other items. Here the handicraft selection encompasses a range of time periods and prices.
Genuine and almost genuine
Speaking of beauty for the home, we must also tell you about the shop,
N?stan ?kta (Almost Genuine). A watering-hole if you want to adorn your walls with art by famous masters. The oil paintings are signed by masters such as van Gogh, Monet, and Renoir, but the prices suit the wallets of ordinary people!
If you are financially savvy you will invest in handicraft of the highest quality, such as the German
Villeroy & Boch. The company, which has existed since 1748, focuses on durable and beautiful porcelain of timeless design for everyday use.
In the shop located in the center of City, the romantics will, for instance, find the collection Petit Fleur; the trendy will pick the price-winning new series, New Wave Caf?, while young people who are just starting out will invest in Home Elements, a strict white series. Ceramic Plus is a popular new series with very durable ovenproof dishes, which make the cook happy.
- Regardless of your taste, you should choose porcelain that lasts a long time, both with regard to style and quality, says Pia Saari, store manager.
